The green paradise of Oman

Salalah, the capital of Dhofar province in southern Oman, is a fascinating city known for its natural beauty and rich history. Unlike most of Oman, which is dominated by arid desert landscapes, Salalah is characterised by lush green forests, waterfalls and an amazing coastline. This unique landscape is mainly characterised by the monsoon, the so-called khareef, which sweeps over the region from June to September and transforms the dry hills into a green paradise.

Salalah is also famous for its frankincense production, which has been an integral part of Omani culture and economy for thousands of years. There are numerous souks and markets in the city where visitors can experience the characteristic scent of frankincense and learn more about the history of this precious resin.

In addition to its natural beauty, Salalah also offers a variety of historical sites. The ancient city of Sumhuram, once an important port for the frankincense trade, is now an impressive archaeological site that offers a glimpse into the region's past. The Al-Baleed Archaeological Park and the Museum of Frankincense Land are also important sights that shed light on the history and culture of Salalah and the Dhofar region.

The beaches of Salalah are another highlight of the region. The fine white sandy beaches, surrounded by palm groves and crystal-clear water, invite you to relax. Mughsayl Beach, known for its impressive rock formations and the natural water fountains that shoot out of the ground, is a particular favourite.

Salalah is not only a place of natural beauty and cultural richness, but also an important commercial centre in Oman. The city is known for its vibrant trading history and its role as a crossroads between East Africa, India and the Middle East. Today, the harbour of Salalah is one of the most important in the Arabian Sea and a major transshipment point for goods.

To summarise, Salalah is a place that fascinates with its unique combination of nature, history and culture. The city offers visitors the opportunity to discover a different side of Oman - one that is greener, cooler and full of historical significance.
