Bodega Nilva - past tradition revived!

The municipality of Manilva on the Costa del Sol looks back on a hundred-year tradition of wine-growing and was already an extensive wine-growing area of the Muscat d'Alexandria - the oldest grape in the world - in the 15th century. In the 19th century, the introduced phylloxera destroyed almost the entire vine population. In the 1940s, farmers began to plant new vines, but especially for table grapes and sultanas - by the end of the 1980s, this had grown to almost 500 hectares.

The building frenzy that then set in ruined everything; more than 70% of the vineyards were destroyed.

But what would our world be without idealists who bring a project to life with knowledge, courage, enthusiasm and patience - such an idealist is the agricultural engineer Argimiro Martínez Moreno from the Albacete region and his project "Nilva Enoturismo".

Between the village of Manilva and the coastal strip, he has created his vineyard on 2.8 hectares: "Viña del Peñoncillo". The calcareous soil, the Mediterranean climate with the influence of the Atlantic Ocean and the coastal mountains offer optimal conditions for the purely organic cultivation of the Muscat d'Aleksandria. Some of the vines are 50 years old and grow almost on the ground, as opposed to the usual viticulture, in order to protect the young shoots and vines from the often strong winds.

In the modern small bodega, the NILVA wine matures in steel tanks and was awarded the best varietal white wine in Spain with the 2016 vintage out of 226 wines from 25 regions.

In cooperation with a winemaker from Ronda, Argimiro is currently working on a red wine in the laboratory.

But Argimiro Martínez has not left it at that alone with his project for the whole: In the CIVIMA (Centro de Interpretación Viñas de Manilva) museum attached to the bodega, the tradition of winegrowing in this region is impressively shown - be it with photos of the past and the present; the tools used in antiquity and the present of the work of the winegrowers and winemakers, always done by hand.
